W02: Create a Life of Meaning
This week in BUS 110: Intro to Entrepreneurship, we took a dive into our life plan and began focusing on WHAT we would like to do. We were asked to watch a video by Randy Pausch, entitled, "How to Achieve Your Childhood Dreams.” This lecture was based on a serious entitled, "The Last Lecture." The point of the lecture was, if you had one more lecture to give before you died, what would it be? In this video Randy shares just that. The narrator in the video shares that Randy was a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was only supposed to live for a few more weeks or months.
He shared the dreams he was able to accomplish. The way he was able to achieve his dreams, is that he didn't give up. He was given advice from a good friend that if he waited long enough people have a way of surprising you and impressing you. Randy attended Disneyland when he was a young boy, he was so impressed with what he saw that he made it a determination of his to create and do what Walt Disney did. He went to school and got a Ph.D., then he sent a few letters of application to Walt Disney Imagineering and they sent back a few rejection letters in return. Instead of letting this be a moment of failure, he didn't give up. He kept trying to achieve what he wanted.
I think it is important to have dreams. Dreams help us explore and figure out our goals and future careers. Dreams help us to know that if one thing doesn't work out maybe another road will or another career opportunity will work out. We can make those dreams a reality by either gaining an education and obtaining a degree or working right away to figure out what we would like to do.
A dream of mine, when I was growing up, was to become a veterinary. I loved the idea of being able to work with animals, and at the time my main focus was working with horses. As I got older I realized that it wasn't something I was super passionate about. I also didn't realize that veterinary is like being a doctor but for animals. And now that I think about it, I don't think I could handle a lot of that work that they do. I also think that my dreams and goals have changed a bit since I was a child.
This week I also learned how important it is to have goals and desires that you want to achieve. Coming into this class I thought I'd strictly be learning how to start my own business. I didn't think it would be tied with so much critical thinking towards my future. But I am honestly thankful this class is full of it. This week we had to write a 50 things list of things we'd like to achieve. I really had to think. A lot of the readings consisted of helping us think about how we are to achieve our goals.
In this class, I hope to have a better understanding of the business I hope to create one day. I also hope I can form better goals for myself, my life, my future, and the things I'd like to achieve. I hope this class helps me understand the very fundamentals of how I can start and create my own business. I know this class will help me grow tremendously. I look forward to understanding entrepreneurship better than I do now.
