W8: Overcoming Challenges

In this week's readings and videos, we learned a lot about overcoming challenges and what we should do when we face those roadblocks in our way. We had a few wonderful readings and videos from leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first reading we read was from a devotional with Elder and Sister Holland. It is entitled, However Long and Hard the Road.

Here are some of the things I liked about what they said:

-It is important that we keep a sense of humor.
-Be excited about your chance to grow and develop and become.
-"Only a small portion of what we are [is developed] and there is an enormous potential in the human being." -Leo Buscaglia
-"I used to think being somebody meant public recognition of one's efforts. Wrong. I now know that the feeling of being somebody comes from hard work and self-growth. Being in control of my life makes me answer that questions with a strong 'Yes!'" - Marily Funt
-The only limitations you have are those you set on yourself.
-"A common man or woman will hear only the commonplace, but a man or a woman connected to the power of heave will learn to be an inheritor of those powers." -Jeffery R. Holland
-Excellence does not come easily or quickly
-Nothing very valuable can come without significant sacrifice, effort, and patience on our part.
-You will face some delays and disappointments in parts of your life
-In life's most crucial and telling tasks my plea is to stick with it, to persevere, to hang in and hang on, and to reap your reward. (D&C 64:33-34)
-Do not give up "for ye are laying the foundation of a great work."
-When days are difficult or problems seem unending, I plead with you to stay in the harness and keep pulling.

The second video was a talk by the former prophet of the church, Thomas S. Monson. This talk is entitled, Looking Back and Moving Forward. Here are a few of my notes:

-God lives and this is his work
-Christ is at the head as it bears his name
-God directs his prophets
-We have the opportunity to change for the better because of Jesus Christ.
-We are invited to come unto Christ. He will give us rest. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
-Mortality is a time of testing.
-The Lord will comfort and lead you

This video kind of seemed out of place for me but when you think about all the challenges we have in our lives, not just business-related. We have the Savior to depend on. He can help us overcome any and all of life's challenges.

We also listened to a few other videos and here are my notes from them as well:

-Embrace thinking backwards
-As entrepreneurs, it is important to clearly know who we are and what our brand is about
-If you involve the Lord in what you do -- he will open doors.
-We need to understand the importance of not underestimating ourselves and the Lord. Don't doubt yourself and what you can do.
-With the Lord, you can do amazing things.
-Whenever something goes wrong, we want to understand  what the root cause
-Behind every technical problem there's actually a human problem that caused it.
(One of my favorite quotes): "Don't you quit. You keep walking. You keep trying. There is help and happiness ahead. Some blessings come soon. Some come late, some don't come till Heaven. But for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. It will be all right in the end. Trust God and believe in good things to come." - Jeffery R. Holland

From all these notes I mostly learned the importance of holding on when times are rough. The road may seem bumpy for a while, but it will eventually smooth out. With the Savior and Heavenly Father in the details of life, we can have the strength to carry on. Our failures don't have to determine our outcome or prevent us from succeeding. Something I look forward to while I start a business is mostly learning and growing. I'm excited to see the progress in my talent and work, to see where I was, and to see how much I've grown.
