W12: Becoming A Change-Maker: "What's a Business For?"

One of the readings for this week's assignment was an article entitled, What's a Business For? by Charles Handy, this article goes into depth about what business is truly for. In an economy virtue and integrity are vital because it helps strengthen a business and help build a customer rapport. As you read pages 3-4 you see how scandals and fraud cause so much pain, disrespect, and the loss of trust from those who invest in you and your business.

Virtue is a behavior in which one strives to live or uphold high morals and always strives to do what is right. Integrity falls under those same rules as well, it's a quality of striving to be honest in everyday dealings and strongly striving to avoid doing what is wrong.

When creating a business, you are going to want to create a business that customers will want to come back to. That means the creator will have to live morally and honestly to gain trust and interest from others. In What's a Business For? I learned, is that a lot of businessmen or women are getting involved with things that destroy business and not only business but the life of a businessman or woman. And these wrongful decisions can have a lifetime of devastating consequences.

Handy described, “The purpose of a business, in other words, is not to make a profit… It is to make a profit so that the business can do something more or better. That ‘something’ becomes the real justification for the business. Owners know this. Investors needn’t care.” The “real justification,” is merely about what the business is about. A business is about sharing talents and/or products that can better help people and the world around it.

The two solutions for bettering businesses that Handy suggested are to find ways to donate to charitable businesses and to build a business based off of what pleases them. I really think it shows a difference being involved in the community. Supporting others whether that be a charity or another business makes a difference in a community’s life. A lot of the time when people start a business it is because it is something they are passionate about. It isn’t always for the money, it's more about sharing skills and talents to make a difference in the world.
